What goes into the loo is no longer visible to us. But it does not mean all that organic waste should go waste. Scientists believe that poo could be a great source of biomethane, which has a lot of potential to be used as a fuel.

There have been some experiments already, where attempts were made to run poo-powered automobiles. Most notable among such attempts were performed by GENeco, a recycling and renewable energy company in the UK.

In its first exercise, this company did the trial run of Bio-Bug, the UK’s first VW Beetle powered by human waste. According to GENeco, the waste flushed down the toilets of just 70 homes produces enough biogas to power the Bio-Bug for a year!

Subsequently, GENeco conducted a much larger experiment where a poo-powered bus (picture above) travelled over 300km on a full tank of biomethane (the tank was placed on the roof of the bus). The company claims that this much of fuel can be produced by the annual food and sewage waste of just five passengers.
